Dell Unveils XPS Brand of High-Performance Computers Also announces related services and TVs for home entertainment (September 28, 2005)

Dell today announced comprehensive, top-of-the-line home entertainment offerings giving U.S. consumers the ability to combine the ultimate in performance, experience and service that has made it the leader in computing.

At a press conference here led by Chairman Michael Dell, the company unveiled the XPS brand of high-performance computers matched with an unrivaled buying and support experience and two digital televisions, including the company's first 50-inch plasma HDTV.

"We're consistently hearing a call for performance, power and style as more consumers see the value of expanding the computer's use for productivity and entertainment," Mr. Dell said. "We're delivering superior technology, design and service coupled with an enhanced personalized experience so consumers can get the most out of everything they want from Dell."

XPS: The Ultimate Technology, Experience
Dell will ramp its XPS portfolio with the XPS 600, XPS 400 and XPS 200 desktop computers and the XPS M170 notebook computer; additional models will be introduced over time. Available now in the United States, the new XPS models are aimed at tech enthusiasts, gamers and buyers who prefer the best products, services and individualized support. Desktop pricing begins at $1,099; the notebook computer starts at $2,699.

All XPS systems are equipped with leading-edge technologies, high standard features and stylistic designs. They include Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, a 15-month security subscription for virus and spyware protection and 17-inch displays (flat panel monitors for desktop computers, a 17-inch display for the notebook). Shipping and one year of XPS limited warranty(a) support is included, too.

Whether consumers are looking for the most power, expandability or portability in their computers, the range of customizable XPS products is unequaled. Dell said the new products address the growing sophistication of consumers who are using computers for advanced multimedia and entertainment applications in environments ranging from dens and offices to living rooms, gaming rooms and home theaters.

The XPS Experience, Customer's Journey
To help customers with their XPS purchases, Dell has invested in and has transformed its pre-sales, sales, online and services infrastructure. For consumers buying products over the phone, highly trained XPS agents will own the relationship from their initial call to repeated inquiries or purchases. According to Dell, this sense of ownership will enable the agents to act as individual consultants to their customers and bring consistency and familiarity to the account.

Consumers choosing to purchase products over the Web can enter the dell.com/xps showroom designed to deliver the best online experience. Interactive and detailed product tours have been added to the site to educate consumers about the benefits of XPS products for specific applications based on a varying set of needs. And, XPS Chat with instant messaging will be available in early October to give consumers quick answers from XPS-trained product advisers.

XPS limited warranty(a) support is also offered to all XPS customers. This gives them rapid access to a dedicated team of XPS-trained technicians who use robust case management tools to quickly diagnose problems and minimize downtime.

Digital Televisions to Create Larger Than Life Images
Rounding out the home entertainment products are two new widescreen digital televisions, the W5001C (50-inch) Plasma HDTV and W3201C (32-inch) LCD TV, adding to the company's growing list of display offerings.

Priced at $3,799 and $1,799, respectively, they have built-in HDTV tuners and the latest enhancements in flat-panel TV technology to deliver clear, bright and life-like images in sharp detail. As the trend from analog to digital televisions increases, Dell said consumers will benefit from the richness and clarity of high-definition television programming and multimedia content that are becoming more prevalent in the home.

Content Insider #148 - The iGen
NO...Doesn't have a thing to do with "that" smartphone...or "that" store...or "that" tablet. It's the next generation. Kids and we mean little kids. That's what today's products are being designed for/targeted at. You happen to buy one...fine. Watch a little, little kid pick up a smartphone. He/she just uses it. They've come pre-wired and we're still trying to figure out how to IM. It's the IGen. They want it instantly. They want to use it instantly. They expect their photos, their video, their music, their stuff immediately when/where/how they want it. Read More

Insider #149 - Game Demographics
The blood, gore, adrenalin challenges that were unveiled at E3 and enjoyed at ComicCon are fun to look at, easy to hold but are they really the games people want to plunk down their credit cards to own or rent time with? Seems as though the investors, the players who control the controllers have a different idea of a "good" game than the kids who develop them. While mobs of people play educational, informational, stimulating games our kid huddles in his room and mumbles "The Few, The Proud, The Gamers." Read More
